Jose Pasillas plays trombone

Jose Pasillas, a junior in Nacogdoches High School’s jazz band program, earned third-chair trombone last week in the Region 21 All-Region Jazz Band competition at the University of Texas in Tyler.

Students are required to learn three jazz etudes – a short musical composition designed as an exercise to improve technique or demonstrate skill of the player – and perform for a panel of five judges.

The jazz band program at NHS is just in its second year. Last year, the jazz band performed at events around the community.

“We are excited that our new jazz band class has allowed our students to improve their jazz skills,” said Band Director Jacob Weems. “This is one of the many results.”
