The Universal Tennis Foundation, the fundraising and charity arm of Universal Tennis Rating, awarded Nacogdoches High School’s program with a $1,000 grant.
The grant – one of 50 awarded to high schools around the nation this fall by UTR – will be used on new training equipment and other supplies, said NHS tennis coach Cullen Holmes.
Grants from the foundation are directed towards high schools where at least 70 percent of the student population qualify for free or reduced lunch in the federal student nutrition program.
Holmes applied for the grant earlier this year.
The NHS tennis program will host its own fundraiser later this fall with a pickleball tournament on Saturday, Nov. 7. Registration will begin soon for the tournament.
The Universal Tennis Foundation Scholars & Scores Count! High School Tennis Grants promote student participation in programs and provide coaches with the tools needed to provide a positive team experience.
The NHS tennis program has 40 students participating, Holmes said. The Dragons have one more team tennis match (at Marshall) scheduled for Sept. 29. The spring tennis season gets underway next semester.
