“Gratitude” is the word of the month for November at Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language. And the students got the message.
The campus collected more than 8,000 canned goods during its food drive this month, topping last year’s effort by more than double the amount. The food and bottled water will go to the pantry at Godtel, which provides housing and food for those in need.
Cynthia Bantz’s fourth-grade classroom brought in 2,775 items to win the overall competition at Nettie Marshall. Denise Cantu’s fourth-grade class brought in 1,776 items for second place. The kindergarten class of Hilda Villaneuva was third with 631 items, and the third-grade class of Kathia Harris was fourth at 384.
The top four classes in the food drive receive a pizza party as a reward.
Classes that receive a certificate for a free meal at Whataburger for reaching the 200-item level include Veronica Jones’ second-graders, Jennifer Inthavan’s third-graders, and Abolanle Odunuga’s third-graders, Charles Medley’s fifth-grade class, Carrie Wright’s fifth-grade class, and Mirna Flores’ second-grade class.
Classrooms that brought in at least 100 items are receiving a popcorn party: Rossana Saavedra’s pre-K class, Linda Brock’s kindergarteners, and Donna Rodrigues’ first-graders.
