Nacogdoches High School junior Jennifer Ramirez is the 2022-23 Region 10 Lieutenant Governor for the Texas-Oklahoma Division of Key Club. Jennifer was elected in February but her official duties began this month. This is the second regional lieutenant governor to come from NHS since 2020.
Key Club is a service organization for high school students and is a branch of Kiwanis International. Region 10 for Key Club in Texas includes high school clubs in Nacogdoches, Henderson, Lufkin, Carthage and private school Regents Academy.
Part of Jennifer’s duties include communicating with the other clubs about activities of the regional board. Jennifer also plans a project for the entire district. She hopes to collect food donations to benefit organizations that provide food, such as Godtel here in Nacogdoches.
In April, newly elected Key Club officers attended the 73rd annual Leadership and Education District Convention at the Dallas Anatole Hotel. The students participated in caucuses to fill district leadership positions, forums to learn how to better perform club leadership roles, and contests pitting them against Key Club members from across Texas and Oklahoma.
NHS Club President David Taravella won first place in the oratory competition. David was provided a prompt and had to deliver a five-minute impromptu speech. After securing an appearance in the finals, David delivered his speech for all of the 500 Key Club members at the convention’s closing ceremonies.
NHS Key Club is preparing for next year’s convention. The club also helps each June at the Kiwanis Club Blueberry Pancake Breakfast during the Nacogdoches Blueberry Festival in June.
