Construction students move on to state competition

Giovanni Servin’s brick wall held up.

The Nacogdoches High School senior earned another trip to the SkillsUSA state competition in masonry with a near-perfect score on his project Feb. 15 at the district contest in Beaumont.

Adalberto Hernandez-Cabral won first place, and Cristopher Doroteo-Hernandez took second in the electrical category.

Giovanni is a student in James Mason’s construction classes and saw only 23 point reductions out of the roughly 1,000 items judges measure. The contest required students to construct a small brick wall. A single point could be deducted by judges for a contestant being off as little as 1/16th of an inch.

Saturday’s district championship is Giovanni’s second in three years of competition.

The electrical contest Adalberto and Christopher participated in has students workly mostly on residential electrical projects, NHS teacher Michael Bentley said. They were required to make a couple of bends with Âľ-inch conduit.

The contest includes working on a breaker panel, switches, plugs and a light or two, Bentley said. Students are provided a plan detailing what is supposed to be wired and what gauge wire to use. Contestants also need to know how to use a multimeter to find continuity and voltage.

The students are judged on proficiency and neatness of their work.
