A noodle bar and cake decorating showcase? Yes, please!
Both were on display Wednesday at the Malcolm Rector Center for Advanced Careers & Innovation at Nacogdoches High School, thanks to an Innovative Grant from Nacogdoches ISD Education Foundation.
Equipment, food and utensils for the noodle bar and a printer with edible ink used for cake decorations were funded by a $1,500 grant in March from NEF. Wednesday was the first opportunity for the Culinary Arts I class to roll everything out for the public, said Shawn Lucena, NISD’s Director of College and Career Readiness.
“It was a great evening,” Lucena said. “The kids were incredible.”
NHS students both decorated the cakes on display and manned the noodle bar for guests. When orders were made, students cooked the noodles right there.
“Tonight was a wonderful showcase for Nacogdoches ISD, Nacogdoches High School and our career and technical education department,” said NISD Deputy Superintendent Michael Martin. “There are just so many opportunities for students to excel at Nacogdoches ISD.”
Those on hand Wednesday were culinary students’ family, friends and teachers. The Culinary Arts class prepared for 100 guests.
“These are the kinds of things that NEF is there for,” said Erin Windham, the foundation’s executive director. “We want to provide our teachers the flexibility and opportunity to try new things in classroom settings.
“Culinary Arts at Nacogdoches High School is a growing program, and we are thrilled to support what they’re doing.”
