NISD trustees name Dr. Darrell Myers interim superintendent

Nacogdoches ISD Board of Trustees on Thursday named Dr. Darrell Myers interim superintendent as the district begins the task of finding a new school chief.

Myers has extensive experience overseeing school districts in Deep East Texas, including prolonged stints at Livingston ISD and Cleveland ISD, guiding the latter through rapid growth that nearly doubled enrollment over a five-year period. Myers has filled in as interim superintendent at a number of districts, most recently last fall with Onalaska ISD.

His first day with Nacogdoches ISD will be April 1.

During Thursday’s regular board meeting, trustees accepted the resignation of Dr. Gabriel Trujillo from the NISD superintendent post. Trujillo is returning to Grand Prairie ISD in North Texas to take a similar position. He had served as an area superintendent with Grand Prairie prior to taking the lead position in Nacogdoches five years ago.

Also, during Thursday’s meeting, trustees approved a contract to use Arrow Educational Services Inc. to conduct its superintendent search. Arrow was the same firm that brought Trujillo to the district in 2020.

“It’s never a good time to search for a superintendent,” NISD Board President Farshid Niroumand said after Thursday’s meeting. “Especially at this time of the school year, which is quickly reaching its end.

“And even more so, when you consider we’re looking at replacing a quality superintendent. I would hope Arrow can help us find someone of the same quality and caliber who has a love for and supports quality education, as well as for our students, teachers and the safety of all employees.”

Myers is a native of Vidor, near Beaumont. He earned his undergraduate degree from Sam Houston State University then received a Master of Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, as well as his Texas Superintendent Certification and Texas Mid-Management Certification. His Doctor of Education degree was earned at Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

In addition to seven years leading Livingston ISD and five years at Cleveland ISD, Myers served as the Texas Education Agency Conservator of Schools at Beaumont ISD. He’s also served as interim at Hardin ISD, Burkeville ISD and Corrigan-Camden ISD.
