Students in Nacogdoches High School's production of "The Bald Soprano"

Nacogdoches High School’s theatre department returned to the “The Bald Soprano” for one-act play competition and turned the theater of absurd style production into a first place at the University Interscholastic League zone contest during spring break. NHS last performed the “The Bald Soprano” four years ago.

Now, NHS takes this year’s performance to the next level, a district competition on Tuesday, March 18, at Hallsville High School.

“The Bald Soprano” is considered an important work in the theatre of the absurd. The play, by Eugene Ionesco, is all about the meaningless repetition of communication and how it breaks down over time, said NHS theatre director Victoria Perry.

The Nacogdoches public also gets a chance to view the performance on Thursday or Friday, March 20, or March 21, at the NHS auditorium. The lobby opens at 6:30 p.m., and the 40-minute long show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5. (Following the NHS production on Friday, the Martinsville High School theatre department will perform its one-act play “Eurydice,” which has already advanced to the Class A area contest.)

Nacogdoches brought home individual honors from last week’s zone contest.
