Summer went by fast! I say that because in a little less than three weeks, we’ll have students back on campus for the first day of school on August 14. And, yes, there’s plenty to do to make all of that happen. On Thursday – next week – all of our teachers will be on campus. Our new teachers will have a couple of days of orientation while the returnees get back into the swing of things.

One of the first things that will take place is on Wednesday, July 31. At all of our campuses, Athletic Director Darby House will have some of his high school athletes at every school that morning to help our new teachers move items into their classrooms. Thanks, coach, for doing that! Dr. Kimberly Welsh came up with this idea, and our assistant principals have been coordinating all the details so new teachers can get a little bit of help moving into their rooms.

We’ll have convocation on Friday, August 9, at the high school gym – and board members, we’ll have some information for you in the coming days about where to park and where you will sit. Convocation is at 10 a.m. that morning, and once we’re finished, everyone will move out to the horseshoe in front of Nacogdoches High School where community members will be grilling burgers for lunch. We did this last year – and we’re grateful for everyone’s participation – everyone who volunteered wanted to come back for another year!

We’ve got some people hired for key positions around the district. Kevin Croft is already at work as principal at Nacogdoches High School, and Laurie Stamper started this week as Director of Student Nutrition, and we hope to have our new CFO on hand next week. These are important positions around our district that we’ve had to fill this summer, and we’ve got excellent people stepping into those roles. And they’ll have to be on top of their game, because they're replacing outstanding leaders who left their mark on NISD.
