Driveway being resurfaced at Thomas J. Rusk Elementary

Several summer construction projects are being overseen by NISD’s Plant Services Department, including improvements at Thomas J. Rusk Elementary that will include new driveway and parking surfaces behind the campus.

Other projects include renovations at the district’s plant services facility on Douglass Road, the Nettie Marshall campus on Cox Street and resealing of exterior walls at Nacogdoches High School.

The driveway behind Thomas J. Rusk is in the process of being completely reconstructed, along with parking behind the campus. The drive is used by parents for student drop-off and pick-up. Additional parking is being constructed for use at the Old University Building, which is on NISD property adjacent to the TJR campus.

At the plant services facility, work being completed includes a new roof, flooring and pavement for parking. The building is used by NISD crews managing facilities and upkeep of grounds around the district.

At Nettie Marshall, the former school campus, renovations are converting the building for use by the district’s Student Support Services department. Classrooms are being converted for use as offices and meeting spaces.

NISD’s Technology Department will be moving later this year into the building on Fredonia Street (behind TJR) vacated by Student Support Services.

Waterproofing at NHS includes checking and resealing all windows and every joint in the bricks, something that hasn’t been done at the campus since it first opened in 1979.

In addition to the maintenance and repair projects around the district, work has started on a 12,000-square-foot training center for teachers and staff that will be located next to the District Support Center. The training center is the final part of the 2018 bond project approved by NISD voters and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Other projects for this summer:

• A generator for the transportation center that will allow the facility to function even when there is no power, enabling communications equipment to remain in contact with buses that might be delivering or picking up students.

• At Margie Chumbley Academy for Success, office space is being renovated to provide additional office space.

• Raguet Elementary is receiving new flooring in its library, admin offices and gym.
