1. CALL TO ORDER

Board entered closed session at 5:01 p.m.
Board returned to open session at 6 p.m.
3. RETURN TO OPEN SESSION
A. Invocation was provided by James Ervin.
B. Pledges of Allegiance led by students from Fredonia Early Childhood Center.
The Junior Student Council at Fredonia Early Childhood Center led the pledges at Thursday’s board meeting. Counselor Monica Simpson is the advisor for the group.
4. CELEBRATIONS/INFORMATION ITEMS
A. Student Recognition
1. McMichael Middle School MathCounts Team – Les Linebarger
Les Linebarger introduced MathCounts coach Andy Watts. The students then conducted a demonstration of their math skills.

2. NHS Science Fair State Qualifiers – Les Linebarger
Les Linebarger introduced Lindy Arbuckle, STEM Coordinator at Nacogdoches High School, who introduced students who advanced to the Texas State Science and Engineering Fair in College Station.

3. NHS Swim Team State Qualifiers – Les Linebarger
Les Linebarger introduced NHS Swim Coach Carrie Scroggins who provided an update on the latest group of Dragon swimmers to qualify for the state swimming meet.

4. NHS Powerlifters state qualifiers
The powerlifters were unable to attend Thursday’s meeting because of a track and field meet.
B. Social Worker Month – Les Linebarger introduced Ruby Ramon, lead social worker for Nacogdoches ISD, who presented an overview of the work conducted by NISD’s team of social workers.
C. Superintendent Announcements – Dr. Gabriel Trujillo
Three NISD Gifted and Talented students have received scholarships from the Region 7 Education Service Center to participate in summer camps. Caleesi and Jaxon Hollins – both students at Raguet Elementary – will attend Roadrunner Camp at Angelina College this summer. And William Bouldin – a student at McMichael Middle School – received a scholarship to an engineering camp at Texas A&M University. That’s great news to share!
Nacogdoches High School’s Andrew Rogers lifted a total of 1,860 pounds Saturday to win a state championship Saturday at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association meet in Abilene. Rogers squatted 675 pounds, lifted 550 pounds in the bench press and deadlifted 635 pounds to win the Division 1 championship over 39 other state qualifiers in the 275-pound weight class. Joining Rogers at the boys state championship meet was Amari Tatum, who competed in the 242-pound division. A week earlier, Jamesha Skinner made an appearance at the girls powerlifting state meet.
McMichael Middle School’s choir earned all ones earlier this month in the concert portion of the UIL Concert & Sight Reading contest. This was the first time in seven years McMichael’s choir participated in the contest. Congratulations to the choir program at McMichael!
Fine Arts is an important part of our curriculum at NISD and on Saturday, April 13, the district is holding its Fine Arts Showcase from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Nacogdoches High School main commons and in the auditorium. Visual art projects – such as drawings, paintings, sculptures and ceramics – will be on display in the commons area. In the auditorium will be performances by elementary, middle school and high school band, dance, choir and theater programs. It’s going to be a great day to see all the wonderful fine arts programs as well as our students, teachers and directors. I’m looking forward to it!
Nacogdoches High School’s boys and girls soccer teams qualified for the playoffs. The girls team was eliminated Tuesday after a wonderful season, and the boys team is still alive. After beating Whitehouse Tuesday night, the Dragons face McKinney North High School at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Rose Stadium in Tyler.

Motion to approve the Consent Agenda as presented was made by James Ervin and seconded by Leabeth Abt. The motion was approved.

A. Workforce Education Service Center – Dr. Gabriel Trujillo
Larissa Philpot-Brown, President and CEO of Nacogdoches Economic Development Corp., and Jimmy Mize made a presentation to the board about plans for an adult education program in Nacogdoches.
