As we head into the spring semester, our winter sports teams are in full action.
This weekend, the Nacogdoches High School swim team moves on to the District 16-5A meet at Porter High School in New Caney. The top swimmers from that meet will advance to the regional meet that will take place next month. Our swim team does an outstanding job, and we’re proud of their hard work and accomplishments.
Our high school basketball teams have had a great week. The boys basketball team is now 3-1 in District 16-5A and in second place in the standings. Our girls have won two straight district games, including a big win last Friday over our rival from south of the Angelina River.
The boys and girls soccer teams at NHS are off to good starts. The boys team is 7-3-1 and begins district play next week and is one of the top teams in the region.
Way to go Dragons, and good luck in your upcoming games. In the next few weeks, more sports will begin their spring seasons. It will be a busy time at NHS!
This week, eighth-graders at McMichael have been getting a close look at Nacogdoches High School. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, eighth-graders visited the CTE Showcase to hear from current high school students about the areas they are involved in with CTE. Tonight, parents of those eighth-graders are at the Malcolm Rector Center to get their students registered for the next school year. Our CTE department does a wonderful job with this event, and the high school student involvement really makes an impression on the McMichael students.
Our band programs at NHS and McMichael had dozens of members earn all-region honors just before Christmas. Additionally, NHS band members were named all-area at the next level and Luis Aguirre, who plays the French horn, was named All-State. Luis will be performing later this semester with the all-state honor band.
I’ve got some more good news from our fine arts program. Marley Hibbard, a Raguet Elementary fifth-grader, will have her drawing on display in March at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, part of the 2024 Texas Art Education Association’s Youth Art Month Exhibition. Marley’s drawing is of Bob Marley, the Jamaican singer, songwriter and musician, who is also the fifth-grader’s namesake.
Congratulations to Marley and all of our outstanding students and staff with Nacogdoches ISD!
