This month is an opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the invaluable contributions of locally elected school boards across Texas.
January is School Board Recognition Month and Nacogdoches ISD is celebrating its trustees for their dedication and commitment to the district and its students.
The theme of this year’s School Board Recognition Month is “Locally Elected, Community Connected,” which highlights the connection between trustees of the school district and their communities. School board members are the largest group of locally-elected officials in the state.
“Our board members are vital to the success we have in the community,” said Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo. “Their dedication, vision and commitment shape the future of our schools and students.”
NISD’s Board of Trustees include: President Farshid Niroumand, Vice President T.C. Grohman M.D., Secretary Leabeth Abt, the Rev. James Ervin, James Montoya, the Rev. Kallie Pitcock and Mindy Winslow.
School boards are designed to serve as the link between the community and classroom, and trustees are elected to establish policies that provide the framework for public schools to operate within.
Last year, trustees signed off on an across-the-board pay increase of at least 4 percent for all NISD staff.
“Since I arrived in Nacogdoches, our board has always proven eager to acknowledge the difficult and vital work of our teachers and staff,” Trujillo said. “As always, I’m grateful for that support.”
