I want to take this opportunity to introduce our new chief of police for Nacogdoches ISD, Joel Barton. Chief Barton is stepping in following the retirement of Sandra Murray, who served this district for nearly 15 years and will be dearly missed. Chief Barton started with us back in August as a police officer. He has also served as a deputy state fire marshal, a state trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety and is a former Nacogdoches PD officer. We’re glad to have Chief Barton with us as he hits the ground running.

Congratulations to Nacogdoches High School cosmetology teacher Jan Holland. Ms. Holland was named the Area 3 Career & Technical Association of Texas Experienced Teacher of the Year. Holland will represent NHS and Region 7 in February at the CTAT Winter Conference. CTAT is an advocate supporting career and technical education programs and the professionals who lead them. Holland is in her 13th year teaching cosmetology at Nacogdoches High School, and that program has been wildly successful.

My goodness, but we’ve had some outstanding fine arts performances the past couple of weeks. Last night, I saw the Dragonettes perform their annual Christmas show at the high school, and last week, our band and choir program – from both the high school and middle school – put on outstanding performances around the district. Christmas is always an exciting time, and our fine arts groups do a wonderful job spreading plenty of cheer.

We’ve had some sad news, as many of you already know. Earlier this month, Tom Miller, a former principal at Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary, passed away after a lengthy illness. Mr. Miller was an excellent leader at BQJ, and he devoted nearly his entire life to public education. I know his family will miss him dearly, and NISD is forever grateful and indebted to Mr. Miller for his commitment to our students.

Tomorrow is the final day of class before we let out for the Christmas holidays. And it’s also an early release day around the district, something we haven’t done in some time. All of our students will be getting out of class early tomorrow… please see our website at Nac ISD dot org for complete details on what time the campuses let out.

And, finally, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. To our teachers, staff, students and their families, enjoy the time off but be safe! We look forward to seeing everyone back in January.
