School is back in session! The first day – yesterday – went just about as smoothly as could be expected. Teachers and campus staff welcomed back children across the district for the first day of school. It was exciting to see our students – both new and returning – back in our classrooms. At McMichael Middle School, the traffic flow worked well… on the first day of class, by the first bell at 8:20, there were only a few students still being dropped off. It was also exciting to see our new four-year-olds arriving at our newly remodeled Fredonia Early Childhood Center. All in all, it was just a wonderful beginning to a new school year!

Football tickets are on sale for the upcoming season. You can go to our website – nacisd.org – and click the Athletics button to find links to buy season tickets for varsity football as well as tickets to all sporting events. This year, tickets will be sold ONLY online for ALL NISD games and sporting events. Also, just a reminder, that the rivalry game against Lufkin will take place at Homer Bryce Stadium on the campus of SFA. On our website, there’s a separate link to buy tickets for that game, which is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 1. And, even as we’re here for tonight’s meeting, the Dragons freshmen, JV and varsity football teams are scrimmaging Henderson at Dragon Stadium. It’s the final tuneup before the regular season starts next Friday night in Palestine.

Next week, Texas Workforce Commission will present nine grants, totaling more than $2.8 million, to five recipients, including Nacogdoches ISD (in partnership with Angelina College). The Jobs & Education for Texans grants, or JET grants, were used by NISD to fund an EMT program through our Career & Technical Education program at Nacogdoches High School. At the high school, in the Malcolm Rector Center, we have a near-fully equipped ambulance unit for our students to train in. The official presentation next week will take place at Angelina College in Lufkin.
