NISD trustees adopt resolution opposing vouchers

Nacogdoches ISD trustees approved a resolution Thursday during their regular monthly meeting opposing vouchers and urging Texas lawmakers “to reject any diversion of public dollars to private entities in the form of education savings accounts and similar voucher schemes.”

The Texas Legislature is expected to meet in special session in October to consider education savings accounts, or vouchers.

The resolution adopted by the board on Thursday says “education savings accounts and similar voucher schemes eliminate public accountability of schools and tax dollars” and that “a taxpayer-funded voucher program would reduce the amount of state funds available for all schools, harming many rural Texas communities where families have few, if any, private school options…”

“We were very fortunate to have our own state representative, Travis Clardy, come in and speak to our staff about this during convocation,” Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo said. “I don’t want to pretend that nothing is going on out there regarding vouchers.

“The district must take advantage of every opportunity to share with lawmakers in Austin that Nacogdoches ISD opposes diverting money away from public schools.”
