A resolution approved March 23 by Nacogdoches ISD Board of Trustees nominated Dr. Gabriel Trujillo for Texas Association of School Board 2023 Superintendent of the Year.
The resolution adopted by the board said Trujillo has “has worked in concert with the Board of Trustees to launch and develop innovative programs grounded in racial equity that expand opportunity for ALL students and to encourage them to realize their true gifts and talents.”
Trujillo was named superintendent at NISD in March of 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down schools across the nation. In January, the board again extended his contract with the school district.
“I’m grateful for the board’s belief and support in what we’re doing here,” Trujillo said. “It affirms that we’re headed in the right direction.
“But it’s also about more than me; it’s the leadership team as well as the school district itself that’s endorsed by the board’s action.”
The resolution adopted last week touted the district’s accomplishments while Trujillo has been superintendent.
“Nacogdoches ISD has garnered local and state recognition for growth realized during the superintendent's leadership, including expanding innovative programs, advancing college and job placements, improving community partnerships, and establishing an effective incentive program of recruitment and retention for outstanding teachers and school leaders,” the resolution reads. “Dr. Gabriel Trujillo has consistently served as an advocate and visionary leader for our rural community, and instructional improvements aimed at expanding equity, improving student outcomes, and growing student achievement.”
The board’s nomination for Superintendent of the Year is submitted to Region 7 Education Service Center, which will award a regional superintendent by June 30. The statewide winner will be announced Sept. 29.
