Nacogdoches ISD second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-graders will compete against surrounding schools in Academic UIL contests this winter.
Henderson ISD will host an Academic UIL Invitational Saturday, Feb. 24, with students from Nacogdoches, Kilgore, Chapel Hill and Carthage also competing.
In recent years, NISD elementary students competed against each other in Academic UIL. Since the 2011-12 school year, NISD has participated in Academics A+. That format will be used in the area competition.
NISD students are just beginning to try out for 2023-24 Academic UIL teams in more than 20 events, and each campus will field teams that will compete at the Invitational.
Contests will be held in maps, graphs and charts; music memory; spelling; number sense; dictionary skills; listening; and social studies.
“Students realize that studying and practicing increases your success, and if their best wasn’t good enough this year, then they would try harder next year,” said Deshmond Johnson, NISD’s Director of Fine Arts and planner of the UIL academic events. “I’m looking forward to the chance for NISD students to compete against area schools. It will pump new life into an event that’s already a favorite among our elementary campuses.”
