Senior Bonfire

A Nacogdoches High School tradition returned Thursday night. The Senior Class of 2018 celebrated a Senior Bonfire at the Nacogdoches ISD AG barn.

It’s been 19 years since NHS staged a bonfire, which was traditionally held at homecoming each year, says Class of 2018 sponsor Roya Dinbali.

On Thursday, seniors gathered for s’mores and treats around the fire that took a couple of weeks for the Senor Sponsors to organize from finding a location, getting a fire permit, and assembling with pallets gathered from Nacogdoches-area merchants.

Senior sponsors thanked NISD Director of Facilities and Construction Ralph LaRue and his staff for helping out. The crew mowed the field, put up fencing, lined off a parking area, roped off the site for the fire, delivered pallets, parked cars and handled traffic duty, then removed trash, debris, fence and rope afterwards.

Nacogdoches Fire Department also had staff on hand to keep the blaze under control. First Christian Church Pastors Chris Page and Brandon Hughes celebrated with the seniors and also donated cookies and chips.

Dinbali and fellow senior class sponsor Lisa Fuller were assisted by: teacher Melissa Bohanon, Renee Holland, Paul Brownfield (family), Russell Leggett and senior officers Katelyn Coutee, Alexus Ceasar-Walker, Austin Burton and Ana Tovar in building the structure that included around 400 to 500 pallets.

The senior sponsors want to thank: Teachers Melissa Bohanon and husband, Megan Ivy and husband, Dorothy Jackson, Betsy Tucker, Heather Payne, Jerrett Cobb, Mike Claude, Coach Jonathon Wolf, Officer Burns, Dottie McClain, Renee Holland, Cynthia Payne, the NHS drumline (under the direction of Chris Cummings) and Nacogdoches High School administrative staff (Roxanne Lathan, Kristin Heath, Don Hasley, Terri Williams, Dr. Igor Gusyakov and Dr. Michael O’Guin) for attending and participating in the bonfire.
