Roy Takes Top Honors at Regional Science Fair

Nacogdoches High School STEM Academy seniors sent seven of eight science fair projects on to state, and Josh Roy won the best overall award at the East Texas Regional Science and Engineering Fair March 1 at Kilgore College.

Students who competed in the ETRSF with Roy were fellow NHS seniors Juan Rubio (Quantifying News Quality), Josh Nicholas (Water Quality Testing), Jordan Vardeman, Cade Luna and Evan Leonard (Detecting Card Skimmers), Katherine Blough, Deja Rogers and Victoria Grisson (Candle Project), Lauryn Brasher and Dessy Gonzalez (Sun Absorber – Charging Robot), Sharmaine Sison and Rebeca Pham (Parts of a Shoe Cleaning Machine), and Andrea Castro, Gabe Giudici and Mitchell Schaefer (Methane Gas Model).

STEM Academy projects advancing to the Texas Science and Engineering Fair in Bryan-College Station March 29-30 are Quantifying News Quality, Detecting Card Skimmers, Photodegradation of Hydrocarbons, Candle Project, Sun Absorber – Charging Robot, Parts of a Shoe Cleaning Machine, and Methane Gas Model.

Roy’s project, “Photodegradation of Hydrocarbons,” was also recognized by the U.S. Metric Association for best use of the international system of units, and the American Chemistry Association awarded Roy with the Outstanding Chemistry Project award, which includes a cash prize. He was also awarded another cash prize from Suddenlink for outstanding research in energy.

With his win for the best overall project at ETRSF, Roy also secured automatic advancement to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Ariz., held in May.

Rubio’s project, “Quantifying News Quality,” won the regional science fair’s Outstanding Achievement in Computer Science, which also included a cash prize from Suddenlink for outstanding research in communication.

Students competing in the STEM (or, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) science fair are in their fourth year in the SFA STEM Academy and are advised by Jason Ray, physics teacher at Nacogdoches High School.
