Nakendra Matthews wins Anne K. Wallace award

Nakendra Matthews was named Wednesday the winner of the Anne K. Wallace Award for Excellence in Teaching. Matthews is an interventionist at Raguet Elementary.

NISD and Raguet administrators surprised Matthews in her classroom with the presentation.

“Ms. Matthews is always willing to do whatever’s necessary to help all of our students,” Raguet Principal Julia Wells said. “She’s just an outstanding member of our team.”

The award is presented annually to a Nacogdoches ISD teacher by the children of Anne K. Wallace, a longtime NISD teacher, in recognition of outstanding dedication to the instruction of NISD students and in recognition of exceptional teaching performance. It also comes with a $1,000 cash prize, which is funded by an endowment established by Mrs. Wallace’s family.

NISD teachers apply for the award, and the submissions are judged by a committee outside of the school district.

“We’re grateful for Ms. Matthews and the effort she puts into her work with students at Raguet,” said NISD Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo. “And that excellence has been affirmed by others outside the district that look over the applications for this award.”
