Nacogdoches ISD launched its SMART Tag student identification system at Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary last week. It’s the next step for the district before expanding the coded tag system to other NISD campuses, eventually issuing a card to every student in the district.

On April 13, students at BQJ riding Bus Nos. 29, 31, 35 and 14 began utilizing the full SMART Tag system for morning and afternoon runs. This week, all students at BQJ have been issued SMART Tags, allowing for an initial “soft opening” with bus riders at the school.

“That allowed us to find a great rhythm with our processes as we prepare to roll this out for more NISD students,” said Stacy Lampkin, NISD’s Director of Transportation.

In the coming weeks, five to six buses will be added to the SMART Tag program until all NISD elementary students are online. NISD’s Transportation Department expects to have the system in place for all district campuses by the middle of May.

SMART Tag will be used on field trips, out-of-town athletic events and other extra-curricular activities that require travel outside of Nacogdoches, Lampkin said, providing NISD staff and drivers the ability to better ensure all students have boarded buses for the return home.

“All of this is to provide a greater umbrella of safety and security for our students and drivers,” Lampkin said. “It will provide information for parents, as well, while students are on the bus, when the bus arrives in the morning and when it returns in the afternoon.”
