NISD suspends girls athletics workouts for two weeks

On June 26, Nacogdoches ISD received notice that a female athlete assigned to the strength and conditioning workouts and sport-specific skill training tested positive for COVID-19. The student last participated on June 18. All students that participated in the same small group have received individual notices of potential exposure.

In accordance with UIL guidelines, NISD has implemented rigorous health screening, social distancing, and sanitization practices for all student workouts, including screening of staff and student temperatures, cleaning of all objects between each student’s use, and limited sharing of equipment. As such, CDC guidance provides that the risk of students contracting COVID-19 from the infected student is low. Nevertheless, in order to safeguard the health and safety of NISD student-athletes, all female athletic workouts will be suspended until Monday, July 13, to allow for self quarantine. During this time we will deep clean the limited areas the athletes had access to, including the field house restrooms and weight room.

The facilities utilized by the female athletes were not used for any other summer training program. Accordingly, strength and conditioning for male athletes will continue. Participation in summer workouts is strictly voluntary for NISD students.

The health and safety of our students and community is NISD’s top priority. NISD appreciates cooperation while working through these challenges and continues to support our Nacogdoches ISD community.
