Gerald Fonzie named new BQJ principal

Gerald Fonzie has been named principal at Nacogdoches ISD’s Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary, replacing Tom Miller, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

Fonzie has served the last six years as an assistant principal at BQJ. He began his career in public education in 2010 as a teacher at Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 2011.

“All children can reach their full potential if just one person takes the time to plant that seed of hope in them,” said Fonzie. “I want students to know they always have someone in their corner who will help them every step of the way.”

Fonzie, a native of Helena, Ark., earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2008. As a senior, Fonzie captained the SFA men’s basketball team that won 26 games and advanced to the National Invitational Tournament at the end of the season.

In 2010, Fonzie earned his Master’s in Education Administration from SFA with certifications in physical education (EC-12) and principal certification (EC-12).

“Mr. Fonzie has proven to be a capable assistant principal at BQJ for Tom Miller,” said Nacogdoches ISD Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo. “There is a strong foundation in place at BQJ, and I fully expect Mr. Fonzie to continue the school’s successful trajectory.
