Chloe Daniels takes spelling bee title at TJR

After 10 rounds and more than 140 words, Chloe Daniels edged out Kennedy Ellis to win the Thomas J. Rusk Elementary Spelling Bee on Thursday, Dec. 12.

The winning word for Chloe was “brambles,” wrapping up the final four rounds where she went head-to-head against Kennedy, who will serve as alternate for TJR.

Once Chloe correctly spelled the winning word, the fifth-graders hugged then posed afterwards on the TJR auditorium stage for pictures.

Chloe advances to the district spelling bee in February that will take place in Lufkin. Qualifiers like Chloe are part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition, and the Lufkin winner would advance to Houston for a chance to qualify for the national contest.

At TJR, 63 competitors started out the first round of the spelling bee. By the fourth round, that number had been whittled to 10 and there were only three left for the fifth round.

TJR teacher Cindy McShurley pronounced the words for the spellers. Principal Paula Harshbarger and Assistant Principal Rebecca Vose were judges.
