Board OKs classroom supply incentive for teachers

Nacogdoches ISD Trustees unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday that will provide a one-time payment in the amount of $150 to all NISD teachers for use in their classroom.

The resolution is part of the district’s Year of the Teacher celebration, where all NISD classroom instructors are celebrated as the academic year comes to a close.

NISD teachers have traditionally participated in the Teacher of the Year nomination process where one elementary and one secondary teacher is selected from each school district for consideration in the contest.

Nacogdoches ISD’s Board of Trustees has chosen to recognize the difficulty posed to teachers during the 2020-2021 academic year by honoring all with a Year of the Teacher recognition rather than participation in the Teacher of the Year program.

The $150 incentive to teachers is for use in their classrooms for supplies or other educational materials, something many teachers buy out of their own pockets.

“This is an acknowledgement, not only of everything our teachers have been through this year, but the fact that so many of them spend their own money to pick up things they need in class,” said NISD Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo. “We appreciate everything teachers do to make their classrooms welcoming to all students, and we hope this gesture by the district helps out.”

This is not the first incentive given to NISD staff. In December, trustees approved a one-time retention incentive of $1,000 for full-time employees and $500 for those working part-time. Those one-time stipends went to nearly all district employees except for principals, directors, the superintendent and executive level administrators.
