Author visits NISD campuses

Kindergarteners and first-graders at Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language learned Tuesday there are a lot of things Ginny Goblin isn’t allowed to do.

Ginny Goblin is the subject of two children’s books by author David Goodner, who was in Nacogdoches all week visiting NISD elementary campuses and middle schools.

Tuesday afternoon at Nettie, Goodner read to students, “Ginny Goblin is Not Allowed to Open This Box” and “Ginny Goblin Cannot Have a Monster for a Pet.” He also shared a bit of his upcoming chapter book, “Kondo and Kezumi Visit Giant Island,” due out later this year.

During Goodner’s stay in Nacogdoches, the North Texas author visited all six elementary campuses as well as McMichael and Mike Moses middle schools. Goodner signed 48 copies of his books that will be placed in NISD libraries.

“NISD librarians work very hard to encourage our students to read for pleasure,” said NISD Content Specialist Marlie Shepperd. “We are so excited to add signed copies of Goodner’s books to our elementary and middle school libraries.”

Students at Nettie had a number of questions for Goodner. “How long did it take to write the books?” “Did he have a helper?” “Are these books sold all over the world?” and “Will they be in our library?” are just a few of the queries.

Goodner said he started writing in 2012. “You keep writing until you get better.” In addition to the “Ginny Goblin” books he read Tuesday, Goodner said he has written others featuring that character but they haven’t been picked up by a publisher.

His “helper” would be the artists who provided illustrations for all his books. Goodner said his books are available in wide release, and Nettie Marshall teacher Dana Harwell assured students the titles would be in the campus library.

Towards the end of his presentation at Nettie, Goodner autographed students’ artwork based on the “Ginny Goblin” character.
