Art, music kits coming for NISD students

Nacogdoches ISD elementary students will soon be receiving art and music kits that can be used in the classroom or at home for virtual learners.

Kits for students in grades kindergarten through fifth were being assembled Tuesday morning at the district’s warehouse. Volunteers showed up from NISD’s District Support Center to spend some of the day putting the kits together. CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO.

The music kits will include a “container drum” and an egg shaker, said Paulette Tomlinson, NISD’s Director of Fine Arts.

The kits can be used in the classroom or at home and will be provided to all 3,000 elementary students in the district.

“So our remote students have something to play at home, each student is getting a container drum and a set of little drum sticks,” Tomlinson said. “They can continue their music education wherever they are.”

Art kits are also being provided to older students. Some have already been distributed, while others continue to come in, Tomlinson said.

Supply and demand has slowed delivery times, she said, although not as badly as originally anticipated.

“We were lucky we got ours when we did,” she said. “We were told it wasn’t going to be until after Thanksgiving.”

The kits – both for music and art – will try to help bring a bit of normalcy to the fine arts classes.

“We’re making sure our kids have everything they need, and that the show goes on” said Tomlinson.
