Parents of Nacogdoches ISD students favor starting the next school year no earlier than Aug. 24, the date originally selected by the district when the 2020-21 academic calendar was adopted earlier this year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic closing campuses.

Fifty-three percent of parents favor the Aug. 24 start; 42 percent support a start date of Aug. 3.

The district is planning to keep the Aug. 24 start date, pending future direction from Texas Education Agency as well as the ongoing impact of COVID-19 in Nacogdoches County.

When asked about instruction options for the upcoming school year, 37.3 percent of parents favor on-campus, or face-to-face, learning for all students. Twenty-seven percent of parents favor online learning for all students, and 21.8 percent support a mixture of both. A model based on parental choice received support from 16.9 percent of those surveyed.

More than 1,100 parents and guardians completed the survey, which is being used as guidance as the district prepares for the start of the 2020-21 academic year. NISD, like other school districts across the state, is awaiting guidance from TEA regarding classes this fall.
