SFA Elementary Ed students to complete capstone projects at BQJ
Posted on 04/19/2017
The Elementary Education Field I students from Stephen F. Austin State University will be completing capstone projects this Friday, April 21 at Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary School library.
From 8:50 a.m to 11:15 a.m. SFA students will be sharing their authored Social Studies children's books about "hidden figures" of history with third to fifth graders.
SFA students researched lesser known, everyday heroes of history and brought them to life by writing original children's books that bring to light "their place in history." After reading the new books to the students, BQJ students will help illustrate the texts before they are sent off for final publication. A similar project was completed last fall.
From 1:15 p.m to 3:20 p.m. SFA students will be leading a BOOKJOY event with first and second graders.
SFA students previously helped BQJ students write poems that have since been published with their illustrations. Now, SFA students are using the young students' texts as prompts for Literacy Fun Activities in conjunction with the Grand Opening of BQJ's BookJoy Benches and Little Free Biblioteca, my Service-Learning project funded by SFA's mini-grant.
SFA students have managed to collect over 300 books to donate to the stocking of the Biblioteca. This is a joint project with a local Girl Scout, former BQJ student.
